Real quick, two things I need to flail about with fannish enthusiasm.

One: I've already flailed about this on [livejournal.com profile] we_love_dick, but I really can't enjoy this in enough places, honestly. Some of you may be aware of my ongoing campaign, No Really, Someone Needs To Cast Matt Bomer As Live-Action Nightwing Already? Well, [livejournal.com profile] regonym brought this to my attention today: apparently, MATT BOMER REALLY REALLY AGREES.

♥♥♥

...Whyyyyyyyyyy isn't this real life yet? T_T

Two: I WATCHED PUNCTURE I REALLY LIKED IT YOU SHOULD ALL WATCH PUNCTURE I NEED SOMEONE TO FLAIL AT.

Okay so I bought this movie for like 49¢, I'd never heard of it, it got really mixed reviews, I wasn't expecting much, but CHRIS EVANS, so I figured it was worth some pocket change. It's based on a true story; Chris Evans plays Mike Weiss, a bearded, tattooed, often-shirtless, drug-addict, fashion-impaired, asshole, train wreck, idiot-savant small-time lawyer. He and his partner take up the case of a nurse who got an infection accidentally poking herself with a needle, and they get embroiled in this whole David-and-Goliath thing with scary powerful lawyers and government and medical supply company conspiracy. The story was excellent.

Chris Evans' performance KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE FREAKING PARK.

I fell instantly and madly in love with Mike. That asshole. He is like a Mike Ross who didn't end up under Harvey Specter's protective wing. He is like Tony Stark if he weren't rich and if he were a genius lawyer instead of a genius engineer. In the pantheon of Adorable Fuckheads he is the adorablest fuckhead since Harry Lockhart. HE IS SUCH AN ASSHOLE and he's so smart and so fucked up and sad and UGH I FUCKING LOVE HIM I CAN'T EVEN TELL YOU.

I must warn that the movie features VERY HEAVY DRUG USE, like, pills, smoking, snorting, needles, LOTS AND LOTS OF ALL OF THE ABOVE. But you should see it. Because Mike Weiss IS AMAZING and I just. I need someone to watch this movie so I have someone to love him with me and I have someone to flail at, there is so much flailing I want to do but SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS.

DO RECOMMEND, especially if you are already a Chris Evans fan. If you aren't, you will become one. Here have some incentive.

HE HAS A BEARD. AND MANPAIN.

JUST LOOK AT THIS ASSHOLE. As far as I can tell he really hates wearing shirts. The ones he does wear are VERY BRIGHT and clash with his also VERY BRIGHT ties. Also he is covered in tattoos, my favorite is the one that trails up his spine. ♥

...WATCH IT WATCH IT WATCH IT PLEEEEEEAAAASE.

I have some advice for you! I'm going to give it to you in the form of a step-by-step procedure.

1. Listen to this song: "Same Love" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert. (You probably know Macklemore & Ryan Lewis from the infinitely fabulous "Thrift Shop"; this is not that song. This is Macklemore's incredibly beautiful and heartfelt gay rights anthem.)

[Error: unknown template video]

2. Cry all over yourself.

3. Listen to it again.

4. Keep crying.

5. Buy Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' album "The Heist" because GOD DAMN IT MACKLEMORE DESERVES YOUR MONEY.

6. Actually listen to the whole album, because Macklemore is genuine and socially conscious and he explores social issues such as gay rights, poverty, street violence, and addiction through the lens of his own personal experience, and also god DAMN is he good with a verse. (Also, one of the tracks is an instrumental, oh Macklemore bless your indie-rapper head ilu so much. ♥)

7. Listen to "Same Love" again, for good measure.

8. You're welcome.

For those of you who like to look at STUNNING BEAUTY, have a link to a selection of photos from this year's National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest.

Prepare for your face to fall off and your breath to come short. These photos are AMAZING. Especially the first one, which is, incidentally, taken by a childhood friend of mine. I used to watch Disney movies and build lean-tos in the woods with this girl. Now she's a professional photographer and DEAR GOD.

ETA: Dallas' jaw-dropping Lava Kiss photo has gone viral. This is so cool! IT'S LIKE I KNOW A FAMOUS PERSON.
zolac_no_miko: (TARDIS)
So [livejournal.com profile] drownedcities directed me to this: I Am the Doctor dubstep remix. IT IS SO AWESOME YOU GUYS. I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT. ALL DAY LISTENING TO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

Also I'm fairly sure that this track proves conclusively that the TARDIS invented dubstep. AWH YEAH DJ TARDIS, DROPPING MAD BEATS ALL ACROSS THE KNOWN UNIVERSE.
zolac_no_miko: (MY PARENTS ARE DEAD!)
Okay, so, there's this AMAZING website called Myths RETOLD (bettermyths.com) where this dude Ovid retells all our favorite myths in Bro-speak, and it is FUCKING HILARIOUS. If you are not already aware of the fabulousness that is this site, get ye over there right away. It's got everything you could possibly want and more: Greek myths, Norse myths, Hindu myths, African myths, Arabian myths, EVERYTHING. Including more contemporary mythology, certain films and novels and so forth that fall into a mythical format. Also, American superheroes.

...You know I can't actually resist that, right? So I will share with you the origin stories of Superman, Batman, and Spiderman, as told by Ovid. Read them, BUST A GUT LAUGHING, and go check out the other myths, you will not regret this, I promise.

"What if Superman was a Nazi"

"Batman is Gifted at Crimefighting, Not so Great at Names"

"Spiderman: Like Batman, but for Spiders"

YOU'RE WELCOME.
zolac_no_miko: (lol science joke)
For my fellow Yanks on this Flist, Happy Amurrican Supremacy Day Happy Independence Day! Hope you're all enjoying fireworks and burgers and hot dogs and lemonade! Because, you know, eating barbecue... it's patriotic! Do your civic duty and EAT THOSE DELICIOUS GRILLED PROCESSED MEAT PRODUCTS! Unless you're vegetarian, in which case, don't. (Everyone knows vegetarians are unpatriotic.)

For the rest of you (and, okay, the Americans too, if you like) there's still something to celebrate... Happy We-Think-We-May-Have-Discovered-The-Higgs-Boson Day! :DDDD

Today, in Geneva, a press release from CERN: CERN experiments observe particle consistent with long-sought Higgs boson.

...What's that? Wtf is a Higgs boson and why do we care? EXCELLENT QUESTION. Allow me to have someone much more qualified than I explain via entertaining cartoons! The Higgs Boson Explained.

And, because these PHD Comics are just so fucking charming and enjoyable, bonus: Dark Matters.

Enjoy!
zolac_no_miko: (trust me i'm the Doctor)
OH MY GOD YOU GUYS, EVERYONE READ THIS RIGHT NOW: toomuchplor's Steinway!verse. It's Inception fandom, primarily Eames/Arthur, "The alternate universe where Arthur's a pianist and Eames is a lyric baritone and their love is so lieder, omg."

I cannot even say enough about this series. The scale of this thing is MASSIVE, which is just fine, because you never want it to end. I'm not even halfway through the stories yet, but I just had to take a break and come yell at you guys and tell you HOW FREAKING AMAZING IT IS AND HOW YOUR LIFE IS MISSING SOMETHING IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN INTRODUCED. It is, just, stunningly gorgeous, beautifully written, I just can't even. I'm pretty sure I was planning on reccing this anyway when I got to the end of the series but "Du bist die Ruh" trufax broke me, I came this close to sobbing all over my kitchen table, which for me is the truest mark of good writing, and I just had to come and tell you all about it RIGHT AWAY. ...Not all of them are sad, okay, but this story, oh god. TT_TT

READ THIS READ THIS READ THIS. I don't care if you're not in Inception fandom, this series stands really well on its own, although of course it adds something to the reading if you've seen the film, there's all these tiny little nods to the canon that are just delightfully well-placed. And if you're a music geek, rejoice! Every story comes with clips to the music featured therein. I am not really a music geek, at least not with Music as a high art form, you know, I will geek out about The Decemberists forever but I know balls about Schubert. But Plor writes about the music with such poetry that you get all wrapped up in it regardless.

...Seriously, though, I am at a loss for words sufficient to the task of conveying how amazing this series is, have some keyboard smash, LKAHJSKDGH;KASHOUAHG;H[OISFMWBNPHAGJAJSGHAIPUFEHAIFSDJKSTFF, there, I think that about covers it, JUST GO READ THIS SERIES ALREADY OH MY GOD.
zolac_no_miko: (Zan <3)
Just came back from seeing Brave, and I'll just say flat-out: I loved it. I guess I can see where the critics are coming from... I'm kind of with them in that it was solid and beautiful and I loved it, but it maybe didn't blow me away the way Up or WALL-E or The Incredibles did, but I almost feel bad trying to criticize it for that, because it really was excellent. And the audience gave it a round of applause!

Basically it was everything I was looking for. Scottish! Feminist! Beautifully animated! Did I mention feminist! Because oh my god fuck yes, this wins my feminist stamp of approval so hard, I'mma maybe not discuss in detail because ~SPOILERS~ but if you've seen the trailers you can probably draw fairly accurate conclusions. When I have daughters I am raising them on this movie. Also The Legend of Korra. Also Mirror, Mirror. But really, this one takes the cake.

There was really nothing I didn't like about the messages of this movie. Also I had to hold back tears a few times. (Although maybe that's just PMS, hard to tell.) ...And I seriously must have some kind of weakness for astonishingly appropriate memorials, because the little dedication to Steve Jobs at the end nearly got tears, too. Not that I feel particularly emotional about the late esteemed Mr. Jobs, but just... in the context of the climax of the film, the way they presented it was just... so deeply appropriate, appropriate and heart-breakingly sweet. Guh.

...So yeah, I heartily endorse this film. Go see it. And stay to the end of the credits, the extra scene is cute.

Upcoming movies that I just discovered and am excited about:

Django Unchained. NEW TARANTINO MOVIE. CRISTOPH WALTZ IS IN IT. AND LEONARDO DICAPRIO. AND SAM L. AND ZOE BELL. AND OTHER PEOPLE. AND IT LOOKS AMAZING. Haha, now that Quentin's taken on Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, looks like he's moving on to American slavery. Oh honey, you're so cute~. JUST KEEP MAKING AWESOME MOVIES OKAY.

Anna Karenina. Tolstoy novel. Directed by Joe Wright, who directed Pride & Prejudice. It has Keira Knightley in it. And Jude Law. AND AARON'S JOHNSON. (Although apparently now he's married he goes by Aaron Taylor-Johnson.) And other people. And IT LOOKS GORGEOUS OH MY GOD.

WATCH THE TRAILERS OMG.

In other news, I think I'mma go see Brave today. I've heard it's good, but not as mind-blowingly awesome as other recent Pixar efforts, but I cannot resist the draw of Scottish accents and feminism.
zolac_no_miko: (Hufflepuff)
Anyone not seen this yet?

Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Gag Reel.

Just as side-splittingly hilarious as last seasons. Ohmigod, I LOVE YOU MY FOREVER CAST! ♥_♥

A few things, picked out of a hat:

-See the subject line. I mean, it pretty much doesn't need to be said, BUT I'MMA SAY IT ANYWAY.

-Lauren German, I kind of love you, actually.

-Also Masi Oka, but I knew that already.

-Loved seeing all the variations of the Max/Kono scene and the Steve/Danny-on-Steve's-couch scene, and what that says about how much the actors are encouraged to ad lib, and how fucking good at it they are, especially Masi and Scott, omg Scott, try to be more adorable oh my god, also thank you for acknowledging HOW GAY THAT SCENE IS out loud, I mean, come on, we're all thinking it, kinda wish they'd kept that cut. XD

-Also how well everyone stays in character even when shit goes completely off the rails. ♥♥

-Oh my god CAN SOMEONE PLEASE WRITE ME THE FIC WHERE DANNY ACTUALLY KNOWS HOW TO SALSA OH MY GOD I NEED THAT IN MY LIFE NOW. @_@

...Yeah I'mma go watch that again, here's to alarming my mother with several minutes of inappropriately loud giggling. :DD

ETA: My mother failed to be alarmed, and instead came to watch the reel with me! :DD
zolac_no_miko: (I am kind of strange.)
Does anyone remember this meme going around several months ago, "My fandom is really good at what I do" or "My fandom is really good at my job", or something of the sort? And everyone wrote AU fic where the characters of [FANDOM OF CHOICE] did whatever it is the author's real-life job is, and the point was to just dive right in and do as little 'splaining as possible? (I tried to go find this thing, but my Google-Fu has let me down.)

...Does anyone think it's been long enough since that happened that we could do it again? Because the last time it went around I really loved my job at the time, but it didn't really inspire me for fic, and anyway all of my fic-writing time and energy was wrapped up in That One Story, so I sort of let the meme pass me by. But now I have a different job and I'm done with Pō Pouli and all of a sudden I'm inspired and OH MY GOD YOU GUYS, I WANT TO DO THIS NOW, I have sooooo many ideas for Five-0 Does Hawaiian Forest Bird Ecology, CAN WE DO THIS MEME AGAIN, CAN WE? ...WHO'S WITH ME? Because I really want to write this thing but it feels dreadfully self-indulgent and silly and I would feel less ridiculous/embarrassed if I had some company. T_T

Anyway, it's about time for the Angela Reblogs Awesome Things Found By Cooler People post. GET READY TO GET RECC'D!

-First off, most importantly, "Shia LaBeouf" by Rob Cantor (on SoundCloud). LISTEN TO IT. OH MY GOD JUST TRUST ME YOU GUYS, IT WILL BE THE BEST THING YOU'VE HEARD ALL YEAR.

-Cover of LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" by Noah. Fair warning, you may abruptly find yourself encumbered with the UNCONTROLLABLE URGE TO HAVE SEX WITH THIS PERSON. I'm serious. Just... just wait until he starts singing. And playing his guitar. SO UNF.
[Error: unknown template video]

Recs and amazing things continued under the cut to save your Flists; Bad Lip Reading, Japan, intense nerdiness, XMFC fic, article about Hawai‘i, and the very very best Avengers spam. )
zolac_no_miko: (somehow I'm not threatened)
MICHAEL FASSBENDER.

There. I just feel like that's always a good way to start, just to get people's attention.

Gaaaahhhh, omg how freaking excited am I about Prometheus? IT IS GOING TO BE SO AMAZING.

Speaking of amazing, watch this awesome promotional video featuring android!Fassbender. I can already tell he is going to be my favorite. (Playlist continues with other cool promotional vids and trailers that are also worth watching, but. FASSBENDER.)

Omg, and just– the cast list, wow. ...Idris Elba with that accent is really weird.

So excited so excited CAN'T WAIT.
zolac_no_miko: (WHEEEEEE~!!)
GO SEE THE CABIN IN THE WOODS GO SEE IT RIGHT NOW.

Ohmigod, avoid reviews, trailers (DEFINITELY NO TRAILERS), cast lists, spoilers of any sort, just, just go see it. Bring a friend to cuddle if you have trouble with scary movies, just, oh my god, it's so worth it. The whole theater was laughing and cheering, and there was an actual freaking round of applause when the credits rolled. Also, Joss Whedon. Also, I told you to see it, just do what I tell you, GO SEE IT.

TIME FOR A BULLETED LIST OF INCOHERENT FLAILING! :DD

Extremely mild spoilers under the cut that you really don't want anyway, mostly to do with casting, just go see the movie right now and then come back and flail with me. )

...So anyway, I walked out of the theater, bought and ate a taco, and walked right back in to see Mirror, Mirror, like a boss. Because I am awesome and I do what I want. Tarsem's take on Snow White was totally charming, and as full of all of the gorgeous set-and-costume porn as I was expecting. The prince was adorable. The dwarves were AWESOME (and multi-ethnic!), the beast was super-cool (kind of a Chinese dragon design), and Snow White was badass (and had badass gaucho pants!). I mean seriously, all of my feminist thumbs up on this one, Snow does all of the saving, really. I would totally show this to my kids, if I ever have kids. I totally called the plot twist at the end, but eh, it's a kids' movie. ...Which was really interesting, actually, seeing how Tarsem does a kids' movie, and a classic fairytale while we're at it.

And then in the credits all of a sudden it was a Bollywood musical, lolol Tarsem you're so cute.

So, not as awesome as The Fall but basically nothing can touch that, that is like a perfect movie. And Mirror, Mirror is charming and lovely and politically correct.

All in all, a super fun movie night. ^_^

zolac_no_miko: (guns in paradise)
Okay y'all, set some time aside and read [livejournal.com profile] ratherastory's "But World Enough, and Time". It's a Steve/Kono AU inspired by The Time Traveler's Wife, and it's gorgeous. I don't care what you do or don't ship (I mean, strictly speaking I wouldn't say I ship Steve/Kono whatsoever), just READ IT. I don't care if you've never read anything in Hawaii Five-0 fandom in your life, or never seen an episode of the show, either; this story stands up on its own. IT'S JUST. IT'S BEAUTIFUL, OKAY, JUST GO READ IT.

...This has been a public service announcement.

Yeah so I'm at home for a few hours stealing some interwebs and I'mma take a moment to bring you this INSTA-REC!!

FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUCCCCKKK WHERE DOES THIS GUY COME FROM. WHERE IS HE AND CAN I HAVE HIM. JESUS. I MEAN JUST SERIOUSLY, TRY TO BE MORE SEXY I DARE YOU.

GUH. THAT VOICE. UNGH.

He's kind of like JGL's dirty-hot younger brother, y/y? With the body type and the pretty boy face and the dimples?

Also WHY HELLO THERE ORAL FIXATION, HOW ARE YOU TODAY. *purrpurrpurrrrrrr~*

[livejournal.com profile] look_alive, bb, you know me so well. Where did you find this guy?!

ETA: Okay no actually he's more like a young Johnny Depp. ...HE'S ONLY TWENTY. TT_TT
zolac_no_miko: (self-explanatory)
Okay so it's past my bedtime already and as usual I am underslept (there is really not enough time in a day to work eight hours and commute and do all of the things I want/need to do), but I'm going to do a drive-by post of THINGS, because if anything I am about to get busier. When the fuck am I going to do my Christmas shopping oh my gaaaaaaaaaaawd!! T_T

First off, Ted Maddry is here with his girlfriend Lea... he's here to teach a Blues workshop this weekend. Mom's on O‘ahu for work, so I picked them up from the airport and fed them and showed them the ropes. It was instantly clear that they are both fabulous people, as I have come to expect from the traveling Swing/Blues instructor crowd; I'm really looking forward to learning from Ted and to hanging out with them and showing them around the island for the next week. Ted bought us beer (Maui Brewing Company Coconut Porter oh my gaaaaaaawwwwd~!) and said some really complimentary things about my mother (that he's been hearing her name from everyone on the circuit as a workshop coordinator who is supremely excellent to work with, and having corresponded with her for this workshop he can now see why) that I hope he will repeat in her presence, because awww~.

So, yeah, I'mma be busy playing tour guide and Blues dancing and having fun, and then next week I'm going on a Waipi‘o-Waimanu backpacking trip with some people, which I am super excited about; with this trip and the Labor Day Mauna Loa summit adventure that's two out of three crossed off of my Big Island Backpacking Bucket List... now if I can only get Pele to cooperate so I can camp at Nāpau-! ...Oh man, and then I've got the Haleakala backpacking trip coming up in January... SO MUCH AWESOME HIKING YAY.

And now a list of Things To Flail About:

- For those of you who enjoy Red vs. Blue, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog, the sillier bits of Doctor Who, and/or THINGS THAT ARE AWESOME, I highly recommend The Visitor from the Future (Le Visiteur du Futur), a French science fiction/comedy web series (don't worry, it comes with subtitles). The show is, in general, much like its title character: adorable, frenetic, and slightly insane (oh my god I have such a crush on the Visitor and his crazyface, for serious, SO IN LOVE), and it's full of time-travel shenanigans and robots and zombies and silliness. So. WATCH IT.

Continued under the cut: rock and roll, naked Fassbender, jet packs, lava, SPACE, and that guy I like. And Batman eats a pony. )

THAT TOOK WAY LONGER THAN I MEANT IT TO, OH GOD I'M SO TIRED, okay bye now!
zolac_no_miko: (Aang)
Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] apple_pathways:

For all you comic nerds on my Flist. And everyone else, too. We don't like to discriminate.

I would dearly love to see an Apokolips holiday "celebration" of Anti-Life. WORST HOLIDAY EVER. ...Also I find it interesting that we have three heroes from Marvel and one bad guy, one of the worst villains ever, of all time, from DC. WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY HERE, GUYS?

So what's new in my life.

Adorable Southern Boy Update (it will be a hilarious day when he discovers my Livejournal and finds out this is how I refer to him): Alex and I went on a Sexy Beach Date on Saturday. There were sea turtles, it didn't even rain on us, and I learned how to stand on a paddleboard. Alex was impressed by my mad not-falling-off skills... I fell off three times, and then I didn't fall off again. (Years of walking on railings at the peril of my elementary school administrators' frowny faces pays off!) Next stop: surfing! (Maybe.)

CHALLENGE: Kiss someone seated behind you without toppling both of you off of the paddleboard and into the sea. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. SUCCESS!

Later that evening he played with the Island Swing Band and I danced, and when the canned music came on at intermission we danced a little, and then I bought him a drink. After the party I was talking to James and Andolie and they were like, "That keyboardist is incredible! Who is he? Do you know him? We think they should have featured him more, he's fantastic!" I got to pass on their comments to Alex and he got all aw shucks embarrassed. It was cute. ^_^

And then this guy wanted to know more about our swing club and he gave Mom his card, and she was like, "...Wait a minute, I already have this card," and he turned out to be Rodger, our pilot from our Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour. The one where Mom and I ran the tour ourselves, and Rodger asked us to please please please contact him later so he could take notes. SO THAT WAS A HILARIOUS COINCIDENCE.

Alex and I will see each other again on Friday night when he plays for Jazz Mele, and we have vague plans for me to show him the good hiking trails in the National Park at some point over the weekend.

...Okay so what else. It's Thanksgiving week, which means today Maintenance brought in a backhoe and dug a GIGANTIC PIT behind our greenhouses for use as an imu. Tomorrow afternoon we're loading it up with about ten metric shit-tons of food, and Wednesday we'll take all the food out and have an awesome Thanksgiving potluck. For my contribution to the imu I cut up a breadfruit and an Okinawan sweet potato, put the pieces in a pan, and dumped a can of coconut milk over it; I have no idea what will happen but I imagine it will be DELICIOUS.

Finally, trailers. )

Okay, that is all, I am very tired, goodbye now.
zolac_no_miko: (two thumbs up)
Sooo, what have I been up to recently besides feeling like I've been punched in the face? A LOT. I shall attempt to be brief.

-The Embalmer's Ball! Friday before Halloween, awesome live music, nice dance floor, quality pupus, pirate theme!

-Went to another Halloween party the next night with the folk dance crew, had a good time but ducked out early to hang with Eric and Micah and Kira (high school friends). We drove all the way to Waikoloa to catch happy hour at Sansei's, this awesome sushi bar. Everything on the menu was half-off, and everything was delicious, and the waitress took awesome care of us and the chef made us dessert even though he usually doesn't, and it was fried ice cream and it was DELICIOUS. And then we drove to Hapuna and lay on our backs in the sand and watched the stars and the meteors and talked about movies and Micah fell asleep and the rest of us went skipping up and down the beach, and then we got back in the car and Eric opened the sunroof and drove the back roads while we stood with the wind in our faces. Didn't get home until after three in the morning, but it was so worth it.

-On Halloween went to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the very first time; had a lot of fun and of course Tim Curry is always sexy even/especially in drag, but all in all I think The Room is a more hilarious experience. Or maybe it's just that I'm usually drunk for that one.

-Was sick for a few days. It was sucky and lame.

-Had the most awesome day at work EVER last week Thursday. It was almost the most boringest day ever. Everyone else in the team was off in Ola‘a or Kahuku and it was just going to be me and Laurèen doing koa processing all day. This means eight hours of sitting in one spot, peeling open koa pods and stripping out the seeds. I remembered to bring my iPod and speakers, so that was a good start. And we're sitting there and we're telling each other, "Hey, we could go to the volunteer house and watch movies, that would be okay, right? It doesn't matter where we do the work so long as we do it, right? Maybe?" And then boss-lady Sierra walks by and says, "Hey girls, you should go to the volunteer house and watch movies!" and we were like, "WOW SIERRA WHAT A GREAT IDEA." And then my iPod died, so we went to the volunteer house and watched movies. And we sat in big squishy armchairs and drank tea and there were KITTENS and we watched Spirited Away, Top Gun, and Aladdin and it was the BEST DAY AT WORK EVER.

Continued under the cut: epic adventuring, downtown dance parties, boys boys boys (okay just one), recs for fun and profit, and PICSPAM OUT THE YINGYANG. )
zolac_no_miko: (hands)
So I wanted to go see a movie tonight, but there were two movies I wanted to see. So I decided to see both of them, because I am cool enough to see a movie by myself on a Thursday night, walk out of the theater, and immediately buy another ticket. I had a full hour's wait in between, so I sat on a bench in the empty mall and read White Collar porn. Gods bless Droid and 3G internet. Basically, a perfect evening was had.

Thusly, MOVIE RECS!

First, The Help. A couple weeks ago I didn't know a goddamn thing about this movie other than what the movie poster looked like and the fact that it had a high rating on the Tomatometer. Yesterday I found out it was also number one in the box office, so I said, "Huh. Guess I'd better see the damn thing." Intentionally didn't look for more info about the movie; decided it would be more fun to go into the movie completely blind. ...Guys, this movie is fantastic, do see it. There were so many bits that had the whole audience laughing loudly and unashamedly, or applauding, or cheering. It had attitude and honesty, fear and love and sorrow and gut-busting laughter. It made me feel ashamed, and proud. It was humbling, and inspiring. Also, Emma Stone. ♥ And Allison Janney! ♥♥ Have some words: Jacksonville, Mississippi; 1960s; stuffed bear; fried chicken; chocolate pie; racism; rose bushes.

Second, Fright Night. Went to see it for the cast list and the Tomatometer rating. Came back totally satisfied. Guys, this movie is fucking charming. Seriously, it's just a straight-up feel-good vampire flick made of fun. And charmingness. Colin Farrell's performance is kind of fantastic; Anton Yelchin is mad adorbs as per usual; Christopher Mintz-Plasse is himself, which is to say, completely fucking fabulous; David Tennant is simultaneously the sexiest I've ever seen him and the very douchiest epic douchebag ever. ♥ The eyeliner helps. Also, "Let's kill something." [livejournal.com profile] look_alive, I think you're going to like this movie. Watch for when the eyeball pops; this shit's all about the details. ...99 problems and a bitch ain't one, but one of the problems is PEOPLE KEEP RUNNING UP FUCKING STAIRCASES, HONESTLY, WTF, NEVER DO THAT, Y'ALL SHOULD KNOW BETTER.

See the movies, y'all. They're nice.

Ta~!
