YOU KNOW NOT WHAT YOU DO

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA... oh god, I dunno where you left off, but I suspect the magnitude of difference from what you remember is bordering on incomprehensible. I'd watched the first season back in the day... waaaaaay back in the day, when it first came out and that was all it was. And it was funny. And I liked it, and I sort of forgot about it for several years before checking it out again. And the first five seasons (The Blood Gulch Chronicles) kind of go on in that vein, although the writing and voice-acting and machinima improves (and the animation, with improvements in Halo), and it's funny, and there's some cool Freelancer bits with Out of Mind and Recovery One and I love it.

And then Reconstruction (season six) kicks off the Recollection series and you realize that Burnie has been working on an epic plot since a few episodes into season one, and The Blood Gulch Chronicles are basically the prologue, and in between the funny are actual important plot points. And Reconstruction is EPIC and doesn't lose the funny but the season finale EXPLODES YOUR BRAIN and it's AMAZING.

And then in Revelation (season eight) they hired this genius kid named Monty who never sleeps augments the machinima with pre-rendered character animation, and it's beautiful and gorgeous and his choreography is amazing and he does all the motion-capture himself, and this fundamentally changes the show again and is the source of most of my recent flailing. We're on Season 9 now and between Monty's animation and whatever story Burnie is weaving for us I am just, like, in constant throes of nerdy ecstasy.

...So yeah, basically this show sneaks up on you, slowly evolves from "Ha ha, this show is funny" to "OH MY GOD HOLY SHIT DID YOU SEE THAT, AND OH MY GOD MY BRAIN, OH MY GOD", with writing and production values that are frankly impressive. This has become one of my favorite science fiction shows ever. I totally recommend going ahead and watching the whole damn thing. ...The nice thing is the eps are so short that even with eight-seasons-plus it doesn't take long to get through them all... I had a marathon with my friends of the whole thing up through season six, and it took, like... fifteen hours.

I can't really give you any sneak peeks of Awesome Plot, because ohmigod spoilers, you really don't want them, but if you'd like an idea of the sort of production values we have now and the omg face-melting action that is possible (Monty I looooooovvvee yooooouuuu), these episodes are AWESOME but are pretty spoiler-free, at least when viewed completely out of context.

Season 8 Episode 10: This One Goes to Eleven. Only spoilery in the context of, like, most of the Recollection series. Out of context, just awesome. Just try to forget you saw it later, or something.

Season 9 Episode 15: The Sarcophagus. This has got a bunch of characters you haven't met yet, so in that way it's spoilery, but other than that fairly harmless. All you need to know is it's a bunch of Freelancers on a mission to steal retrieve something... that's all I really know at this point, actually.
