zolac_no_miko: (I like this icon alot.)

I know you have no idea what I'm on about nor do you care, but I just need a place to preserve things for posterity, and plurk is not great for that.

So, for some context: my Steve and his traveling companions, Beckett and Rydia, a.k.a Team Too Dumb To Live, made themselves horrendously ill burning furniture in one of the houses. This is apparently due to some sort of noxious death mold, but they didn't know that at the time, their first thought was THE FURNITURE IS POISON BECAUSE NORFINBURY IS A SADISTIC HELLHOLE (reasonable assumption). ...And when I say tremendously ill, I mean coughing, dizziness, nausea, and coughing up black goo for a solid week.

So, on the one hand, Team Too Dumb To Live. On the other hand, Dr. Clayton Epps, professional worry-wort, earnestly trying to keep his fellow prisoners healthy and safe. And the situation they're all currently in, which just gets funnier and funnier the more I think about it.

So. Steve, Beckett, and Rydia make themselves horribly ill burning furniture.

Clayton: "Stay here and rest, I'll go get food!"

Beckett: *Clayton doesn't even know he's sick, Beckett is actively hiding from him in another house because he was just horribly sick a few days ago and he's embarrassed*

Steve, Beckett, and Rydia: *NOT RESTING, go for a hike in a blizzard and BURN MORE FURNITURE, for science! (Steve is the ringleader)*

Beckett: *goes back to hiding, soon will have nothing to eat but herbal tea*

Rydia: *gets lost in the blizzard and ends up a full day's travel in the wrong direction in the funeral home, handcuffed to a toilet and made to endure a night of horrors while trying to chew her hand off*

Clayton: cMWalaa.gif

I just. I'm so sorry, Clayton. So sorry. XD

Also, we had an extensive plurk conversation about pee. A highlight: at least one of the characters is peeing into a bottle and using it as a hot water bottle to keep warm.

...I cannot tell you how much I love this game and these players. ♥_♥

In other news, have a barrel organ playing Smooth Criminal.

zolac_no_miko: (Timmy: alone in my darkroom later)
For fans of Scary!Timmy who want to know what the inside of his head sounds like, or, if you'd just like a creepy mixtape of stalking and unhealthy obsession, at last, the official soundtrack of I'll Be Yours (A Love Story). Enjoy! :D

One of the songs on the soundtrack is, technically, a plot spoiler for Chapter 10. So, do what you want with that information.

Some of you may know about my ankh. If you don't, here's the story.

My grand-aunt gave it to me when I was a kid; she says she "found it"; I've never asked what that means exactly, but I sometimes think it means "on the sidewalk". Anyway, I was going through my EGYPT STUFF IS COOL phase (which, like my horse phase, I never really grew out of), so I was like OMG COOL NECKLACE. I used to bring it with me when I traveled, because it was black and silver, and could be dressy or casual, so basically it went with everything. Often times it was the only jewelry piece I brought with me.

Over time, it got so that it didn't feel right if I traveled without it, ever. I developed a mild superstition about it. When there was turbulence, or if I had any passing anxious plane-crash fantasy, I would touch the necklace and feel better. I started to wear it all the time when I wasn't traveling. It was my Lucky Necklace, and as I said, it matched with everything. When artistic friends sketched my likeness, they invariably included the ankh; it was a part of me. I had to change the cord once or twice, but the pendant stuck with me. I used to worry; what the hell would I do if I ever lost it?

Last September I went on a trip to Europe with my mother, and of course the ankh came with me, through limestone mountains and over river rapids and into the Adriatic Sea. We visited my darling Neve in Bulgaria, and on a walk through the autumn woods on a mountain called Rila, my ankh broke in half, seemingly entirely at random. By the time I noticed, the bottom half was lost forever in the fallen leaves.

I was heartbroken, as you can imagine. But what could I do? I had to be zen about it. There was no getting it back, and getting upset would do nothing for me. And I'm not actually superstitious, so I knew I'd be perfectly safe traveling without it. But I felt naked without it.

Friends suggested I buy a replacement ankh, but... I couldn't just buy any old ankh from Hot Topic, it had to be special. I was determined to find a replacement pendant, another ankh or something else, but I knew I'd have to wait for it to come to me.

...So on my date with Forrest on Sunday (four days ago), I happened to give him the short version of this story. On our date tonight, he gives me this:
Picture under cut because big. )

I was procrastinating, he says, so I made it for you. (Read, PERSONALLY CARVED BY HAND.) It's abalone. I thought it matched your eyes, which are, by the way, beautiful, he says. He says, the brass bead at the top is from Ethiopia, it's a hundred years old.

The ankh is perfect and beautiful, I will wear it all the time and keep it forever. Possibly I will also keep Forrest forever, oh my god.

Also tonight was the first rock concert I've been to since I left Portland. IT WAS SO EXCELLENT. Opening band was Mike Love and Paula Fuga and... whoever their drummer was, doing some local reggae that I actually kind of adored. Never seen Fuga live before... goddamn that woman can sing. The main act was Nahko and Medicine for the People, back in Hilo again after a year of touring. When I heard Medicine for the People two years ago they were a reggae band. Now they're straight-up, punch-you-in-the-face rock and roll with flavors of tribal drums and beat-boxing, with subtle reggae, world music, and Hawaiian influences and a world peace/First Nations issues/environmentalism sensibility. They're mixed-race and mixed-gender and full of bouncy energy and badassery and adorableness, especially Nahko, omg what a lovely and hilarious human being. I bought their new album, and I'll be keeping a close eye on them in the future.

...Gods I've missed rock concerts. I had so much fun.

So worth the... almost no sleep I'm going to get tonight. Early morning drive to Hakalau to catch birds, WHOO.

ETA: IN A HORRIBLE IRONIC TWIST, after staying up to 3 a.m. making lunch for the field and printing papers to read during downtime, I slept straight through my alarm and the group left without me, thus negating my reason for making lunch and printing papers. I feel like a shit head because E asked for my help and I let him down. FML. ...On the plus side, I really need the sleep and the study time? ......But srsly fml.

I have some advice for you! I'm going to give it to you in the form of a step-by-step procedure.

1. Listen to this song: "Same Love" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert. (You probably know Macklemore & Ryan Lewis from the infinitely fabulous "Thrift Shop"; this is not that song. This is Macklemore's incredibly beautiful and heartfelt gay rights anthem.)

[Error: unknown template video]

2. Cry all over yourself.

3. Listen to it again.

4. Keep crying.

5. Buy Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' album "The Heist" because GOD DAMN IT MACKLEMORE DESERVES YOUR MONEY.

6. Actually listen to the whole album, because Macklemore is genuine and socially conscious and he explores social issues such as gay rights, poverty, street violence, and addiction through the lens of his own personal experience, and also god DAMN is he good with a verse. (Also, one of the tracks is an instrumental, oh Macklemore bless your indie-rapper head ilu so much. ♥)

7. Listen to "Same Love" again, for good measure.

8. You're welcome.
zolac_no_miko: (WHEEEEEE~!!)
So those music memes were fun, but somehow not quite satisfying enough for me. I want more music. I want to talk about music. So I'm going to make my own meme for the purposes of musicvomiting all over everything. :D

My Music Top 20

Go to the music player of your choice, sort your songs by number of plays, select your Top 20 most-played songs (or whatever number you feel like, really) and talk about them– what do you love about the song, why does it get played so often, etc. Invite your friends to geek out with you in the comments!

Dark songs, bouncy songs, roadtrip songs. )
zolac_no_miko: (GUITAR SOLO!)
I may at some point in the near future do a post with a real life update, but that is not what I'm doing tonight. Tonight I'm doing MORE MEMES, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] apple_pathways.

1. The ABCs of Music Meme!

Open your iTunes (other weird holder of music) and press the corresponding letter into the song name (find a song you love, put it in the post) then the artist (find the band you love, put it in the post) and THERE YOU HAVE IT!

The instructions are totally baffling, but if you look at my list you figure it out. )

2. Non-Denominational Music Player Survey )

Okay, that was awesome, COME TALK TO ME ABOUT MUSIC. :D

More memes to come, but it is late and I am le tired.
zolac_no_miko: (TARDIS)
So [livejournal.com profile] drownedcities directed me to this: I Am the Doctor dubstep remix. IT IS SO AWESOME YOU GUYS. I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT. ALL DAY LISTENING TO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

Also I'm fairly sure that this track proves conclusively that the TARDIS invented dubstep. AWH YEAH DJ TARDIS, DROPPING MAD BEATS ALL ACROSS THE KNOWN UNIVERSE.
zolac_no_miko: (trust me i'm the Doctor)
OH MY GOD YOU GUYS, EVERYONE READ THIS RIGHT NOW: toomuchplor's Steinway!verse. It's Inception fandom, primarily Eames/Arthur, "The alternate universe where Arthur's a pianist and Eames is a lyric baritone and their love is so lieder, omg."

I cannot even say enough about this series. The scale of this thing is MASSIVE, which is just fine, because you never want it to end. I'm not even halfway through the stories yet, but I just had to take a break and come yell at you guys and tell you HOW FREAKING AMAZING IT IS AND HOW YOUR LIFE IS MISSING SOMETHING IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN INTRODUCED. It is, just, stunningly gorgeous, beautifully written, I just can't even. I'm pretty sure I was planning on reccing this anyway when I got to the end of the series but "Du bist die Ruh" trufax broke me, I came this close to sobbing all over my kitchen table, which for me is the truest mark of good writing, and I just had to come and tell you all about it RIGHT AWAY. ...Not all of them are sad, okay, but this story, oh god. TT_TT

READ THIS READ THIS READ THIS. I don't care if you're not in Inception fandom, this series stands really well on its own, although of course it adds something to the reading if you've seen the film, there's all these tiny little nods to the canon that are just delightfully well-placed. And if you're a music geek, rejoice! Every story comes with clips to the music featured therein. I am not really a music geek, at least not with Music as a high art form, you know, I will geek out about The Decemberists forever but I know balls about Schubert. But Plor writes about the music with such poetry that you get all wrapped up in it regardless.

...Seriously, though, I am at a loss for words sufficient to the task of conveying how amazing this series is, have some keyboard smash, LKAHJSKDGH;KASHOUAHG;H[OISFMWBNPHAGJAJSGHAIPUFEHAIFSDJKSTFF, there, I think that about covers it, JUST GO READ THIS SERIES ALREADY OH MY GOD.
zolac_no_miko: (I am kind of strange.)
Does anyone remember this meme going around several months ago, "My fandom is really good at what I do" or "My fandom is really good at my job", or something of the sort? And everyone wrote AU fic where the characters of [FANDOM OF CHOICE] did whatever it is the author's real-life job is, and the point was to just dive right in and do as little 'splaining as possible? (I tried to go find this thing, but my Google-Fu has let me down.)

...Does anyone think it's been long enough since that happened that we could do it again? Because the last time it went around I really loved my job at the time, but it didn't really inspire me for fic, and anyway all of my fic-writing time and energy was wrapped up in That One Story, so I sort of let the meme pass me by. But now I have a different job and I'm done with Pō Pouli and all of a sudden I'm inspired and OH MY GOD YOU GUYS, I WANT TO DO THIS NOW, I have sooooo many ideas for Five-0 Does Hawaiian Forest Bird Ecology, CAN WE DO THIS MEME AGAIN, CAN WE? ...WHO'S WITH ME? Because I really want to write this thing but it feels dreadfully self-indulgent and silly and I would feel less ridiculous/embarrassed if I had some company. T_T

Anyway, it's about time for the Angela Reblogs Awesome Things Found By Cooler People post. GET READY TO GET RECC'D!

-First off, most importantly, "Shia LaBeouf" by Rob Cantor (on SoundCloud). LISTEN TO IT. OH MY GOD JUST TRUST ME YOU GUYS, IT WILL BE THE BEST THING YOU'VE HEARD ALL YEAR.

-Cover of LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" by Noah. Fair warning, you may abruptly find yourself encumbered with the UNCONTROLLABLE URGE TO HAVE SEX WITH THIS PERSON. I'm serious. Just... just wait until he starts singing. And playing his guitar. SO UNF.

Actual post to let y'all know what's going on with my life?

Pffff, yeah I don't actually have time for that, what are you talking about. IT'S GOOD THINGS, THOUGH, DON'T WORRY.

I've just been listening to a lot of fun. recently. Like, whenever I have access to my music, fun. all the time. (THANK YOU [livejournal.com profile] look_alive!!) And it occurs to me that "All Alright" could be a good song for Tony Stark, y/y?

ETA: Okay no actually he's more like a young Johnny Depp. ...HE'S ONLY TWENTY. TT_TT
zolac_no_miko: (authentic Hawaiian coconut tree)
Yesterday Alex and I went to Makalawena Beach, which is a gorgeous white sand beach in Kekaha Kai State Park on the Kona side, that can only be accessed by either a) walking a long way in the hot hot sun over sharp, rough ‘a‘a rock, or b) taking your life in your hands and a 4x4 vehicle that you don't like very much down the access "road". Alex has a Nissan XTerra and is the best kind of lunatic, so we went with option b. (No seriously, I can't even tell you how fucked up this 4x4 track is, I mean, I've driven in some pretty effing gnarly places for my various internships, but jesus, that road gave us a thrashing! :DD)

Anyway, skipping past all of the very excellent things about Makalawena and going straight to the WHALES, OMG SO MANY WHALES, HOLY SHIT WHALES~!!! It's humpback season in Hawai‘i, and I've been looking and looking and hadn't seen any until yesterday just before sunset, when HOLY SHIT SO MANY WHALES showed up. I can't even, I've lived in Hawai‘i my whole life and I've traveled to Alaska and I've had some pretty freaking excellent whale sightings, but in terms of the combination of sheer number of whales, proximity to the whales, and whale activity, this was THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN. There had to have been a dozen of them, at least, maybe more, hard to tell, they're under the water and they move around, so. There were definitely one or two babies. The closest whales, a group of I think three, including a baby, was FOR SERIOUS ONLY A HUNDRED METERS OFF SHORE. We could have swum out to them easily if that wasn't a) illegal, and b) dangerous. There was a lot of spouting and we had a couple nice views of tails, and then there were the two whales further out that just WOULD NOT STOP BREACHING, they were having a freaking BREACHING PARTY, oh my god, just flinging themselves bodily out of the water OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

...Okay [livejournal.com profile] platoapproved, it's safe now.

So anyway, this beach. Not too crowded due to the effort it takes to get there, and it's beautiful and there are fun sea creatures and the waves are nice for bodyboarding or surfing, and there were moa (those Polynesian chickens) wandering around entertaining us by boldly stealing food from people's unwatched bags. And surrounding the beach there are a series of rare anchialine ponds and ʻŌpaeʻula Pond, a wetland area that's a National Natural Landmark and is one of the only remaining breeding and nesting areas for rare Hawaiian wetland birds such as the āeʻo (Hawaiian Stilt), the ʻalae keʻokeʻo (Hawaiian Coot), and the ʻaukuʻu (Black-crowned Night Heron). There were SO MANY STILTS, which was super exciting, you almost never see those, and I've never seen so many at once, oh my gaaaaaawd I really wished I'd brought binoculars, and oh my god this place is totally going on my list of Awesome Birding Places to take [livejournal.com profile] shichahn to when she finally comes to visit me.

Also, check out how cute this bird is, seriously. )

...And the vog wasn't bad and the sunset was FUCKING BEAUTIFUL and asghsla;hfklsahgkfs it was a Perfect. Freaking. Day. TT_TT

Also tomorrow is a holiday so tonight a bunch of us are driving up to Kawaihae for dinner at the Blue Dragon and SO MUCH DANCING to the very excellent Olliephonics, OMG YAY I AM EXCITE.
zolac_no_miko: (communist party)

Hope you all had an excellent New Year's party, because it's the last chance we're going to get! Aww yiss, bring on the apocalypse~!

...Stay cool, Flist. Have a fab 2012. ♥

ETA: Can someone tell me if they can actually see the video I've supposedly embedded? Because I get nothing. I've been having this problem for weeks when I try to embed YouTubes, it's driving me nuts.

zolac_no_miko: (self-explanatory)
Okay so it's past my bedtime already and as usual I am underslept (there is really not enough time in a day to work eight hours and commute and do all of the things I want/need to do), but I'm going to do a drive-by post of THINGS, because if anything I am about to get busier. When the fuck am I going to do my Christmas shopping oh my gaaaaaaaaaaawd!! T_T

First off, Ted Maddry is here with his girlfriend Lea... he's here to teach a Blues workshop this weekend. Mom's on O‘ahu for work, so I picked them up from the airport and fed them and showed them the ropes. It was instantly clear that they are both fabulous people, as I have come to expect from the traveling Swing/Blues instructor crowd; I'm really looking forward to learning from Ted and to hanging out with them and showing them around the island for the next week. Ted bought us beer (Maui Brewing Company Coconut Porter oh my gaaaaaaawwwwd~!) and said some really complimentary things about my mother (that he's been hearing her name from everyone on the circuit as a workshop coordinator who is supremely excellent to work with, and having corresponded with her for this workshop he can now see why) that I hope he will repeat in her presence, because awww~.

So, yeah, I'mma be busy playing tour guide and Blues dancing and having fun, and then next week I'm going on a Waipi‘o-Waimanu backpacking trip with some people, which I am super excited about; with this trip and the Labor Day Mauna Loa summit adventure that's two out of three crossed off of my Big Island Backpacking Bucket List... now if I can only get Pele to cooperate so I can camp at Nāpau-! ...Oh man, and then I've got the Haleakala backpacking trip coming up in January... SO MUCH AWESOME HIKING YAY.

And now a list of Things To Flail About:

- For those of you who enjoy Red vs. Blue, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog, the sillier bits of Doctor Who, and/or THINGS THAT ARE AWESOME, I highly recommend The Visitor from the Future (Le Visiteur du Futur), a French science fiction/comedy web series (don't worry, it comes with subtitles). The show is, in general, much like its title character: adorable, frenetic, and slightly insane (oh my god I have such a crush on the Visitor and his crazyface, for serious, SO IN LOVE), and it's full of time-travel shenanigans and robots and zombies and silliness. So. WATCH IT.

Continued under the cut: rock and roll, naked Fassbender, jet packs, lava, SPACE, and that guy I like. And Batman eats a pony. )

zolac_no_miko: (two thumbs up)
Sooo, what have I been up to recently besides feeling like I've been punched in the face? A LOT. I shall attempt to be brief.

-The Embalmer's Ball! Friday before Halloween, awesome live music, nice dance floor, quality pupus, pirate theme!

-Went to another Halloween party the next night with the folk dance crew, had a good time but ducked out early to hang with Eric and Micah and Kira (high school friends). We drove all the way to Waikoloa to catch happy hour at Sansei's, this awesome sushi bar. Everything on the menu was half-off, and everything was delicious, and the waitress took awesome care of us and the chef made us dessert even though he usually doesn't, and it was fried ice cream and it was DELICIOUS. And then we drove to Hapuna and lay on our backs in the sand and watched the stars and the meteors and talked about movies and Micah fell asleep and the rest of us went skipping up and down the beach, and then we got back in the car and Eric opened the sunroof and drove the back roads while we stood with the wind in our faces. Didn't get home until after three in the morning, but it was so worth it.

-On Halloween went to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the very first time; had a lot of fun and of course Tim Curry is always sexy even/especially in drag, but all in all I think The Room is a more hilarious experience. Or maybe it's just that I'm usually drunk for that one.

-Was sick for a few days. It was sucky and lame.

-Had the most awesome day at work EVER last week Thursday. It was almost the most boringest day ever. Everyone else in the team was off in Ola‘a or Kahuku and it was just going to be me and Laurèen doing koa processing all day. This means eight hours of sitting in one spot, peeling open koa pods and stripping out the seeds. I remembered to bring my iPod and speakers, so that was a good start. And we're sitting there and we're telling each other, "Hey, we could go to the volunteer house and watch movies, that would be okay, right? It doesn't matter where we do the work so long as we do it, right? Maybe?" And then boss-lady Sierra walks by and says, "Hey girls, you should go to the volunteer house and watch movies!" and we were like, "WOW SIERRA WHAT A GREAT IDEA." And then my iPod died, so we went to the volunteer house and watched movies. And we sat in big squishy armchairs and drank tea and there were KITTENS and we watched Spirited Away, Top Gun, and Aladdin and it was the BEST DAY AT WORK EVER.

Continued under the cut: epic adventuring, downtown dance parties, boys boys boys (okay just one), recs for fun and profit, and PICSPAM OUT THE YINGYANG. )

zolac_no_miko: (Hello IT.)
I've just deauthorized all computers that were previously able to access my iTunes purchases, because it turns out I was unable to access them with my current computer, since I was already maxed out. So if you're one of, I think, three friends that I've been allowing to pretend to be me, and you are suddenly unable to access a few of your songs, that's why.
zolac_no_miko: (two thumbs up)
So, Super 8? Super GREAT! *rimshot!*

No seriously this movie was awesome. Speaking of fucking charming. The scary parts were the right kind of scary, and the funny parts had the whole audience laughing helplessly. Good script, good directing, good acting, ADORABLE KIDS. No seriously where did they get these kids, they should give them all Oscars. Did I mention the good acting?

The movie was a fun mystery; I had a great time trying to piece things together as it went along. As a period piece it was charming; there were all of these little nods to the time period that were like, "LOL GUYS CHECK IT OUT IT'S 1979, ISN'T IT HILARIOUS?!" Although I am seriously starting to think "My Sharona" is stalking me today. Can we make "My Sharona" today's official theme song? Okay? Yes. It's official.

Favorite moment:
"He's too stoned!"

Do stay for the credits, oh my god.

...You know, this movie is kind of exactly what I should have expected, considering SPOILERS. Mild and very brief spoilers, but stay out if you'd rather go into the movie with nothing more than the trailer gave you. )

Tell you what, though, if I see people slashing Charles and Martin I am going to stab my eyes out.

...So anyway. That happened. And then I got home and put on a pair of pink polka-dot pants and ate an organic vegetable-pie pocket sandwich and blue jello, and watched Doctor Who. So that was fabulous. And I mean, like, really fabulous. THAT EPISODE. SO AMAZING. And I was starting to worry, too, with the second half of the season starting off with two thoroughly mediocre episodes. And next week: "The God Complex"! I am excite! (Everyone saw the trailer for "The God Complex" back in July, right?) I hope it's as good as I want it to be. I can't stop thinking of it as the House. I mean– minotaur! Dude raving in decidedly Johnny Truant manner! As I have commented before, I will be disappointed if the episode doesn't start playing upside-down or sideways or backwards or in Braïlle, even if I have no idea how that would work.
zolac_no_miko: (authentic Hawaiian coconut tree)
There's something very satisfying about preparing breadfruit. Like I can feel the weight of history pressing down on me, the thousands of years that the peoples of the Pacific have used this food to sustain themselves and their families.

...This video has nothing to do with ‘ulu or other staple foods. I... don't really know what is going on in this video, but damn this chick has pipes. Girl's got soul. I can't stop listening to this song.
