Hope all the Americans on my Flist had a nice Thanksgiving weekend (and for everyone else, hope you had nice weekends, too, and lots of wonderful things to be thankful for).

So, let's think about things we're thankful for. For instance, I am thankful for the Internet. The Internet is a wonderful fucking place, and I for one am not pleased by the U.S. Congress trying to ruin my Internet. Y'all have heard about SOPA/PIPA by now, right? No?

From the Washington Post:
"Imagine a country where the government is able to shut down Web sites at the slightest provocation, where elected representatives invoke fears of "overseas pirates" to defend the interests of domestic industries, and where Internet companies like Google must cave in to the demands of government censors or risk being shut down.

No, we are not talking about China, North Korea or Iran — we are talking about the United States, where legislators in both the House and Senate are attempting to push through new anti-piracy legislation by year-end that would benefit Hollywood at the expense of Silicon Valley."

From Wikipedia:
"The bill would authorize the U.S. Department of Justice to seek court orders against websites outside U.S. jurisdiction accused of infringing on copyrights, or of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement.[4] After delivering a court order, the U.S. Attorney-General (AG) could require US-directed Internet service providers, ad networks such as Google and payment processors such as Paypal or Visa to suspend doing business with sites found to infringe on federal criminal intellectual property laws and take "technically feasible and reasonable measures" to prevent access to the infringing site. The AG could also bar search engines from displaying links to the sites.[12]

The bill also establishes a two-step process for intellectual property rights holders to seek relief if they have been harmed by a site dedicated to infringement. The rights holder must first notify, in writing, related payment facilitators and ad networks of the identity of the website, who, in turn, must then forward that notification and suspend services to that identified website, unless that site provides a counter notification explaining how it is not in violation. The rights holder is then authorized to commence legal action for court-ordered limited injunctive relief against the site operator, if such a counter notification is provided, or if the payment or advertising services fail to suspend service in the absence of a counter notification.[12]

The bill provides immunity from liability to the ad and payment networks that comply with this Act or that take voluntary action to cut ties to such sites. Any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement would be liable for damages.[4]

The second section increases the penalties for streaming video and for selling counterfeit drugs, military materials or consumer goods. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyprotected content a felony.[12]"

From wiredforchange.com:
"As drafted, the legislation would grant the government and private parties unprecedented power to interfere with the Internet's domain name system (DNS). The government would be able to force ISPs and search engines to redirect or dump users' attempts to reach certain websites' URLs. In response, third parties will woo average users to alternative servers that offer access to the entire Internet (not just the newly censored U.S. version), which will create new computer security vulnerabilities as the reliability and universality of the DNS evaporates.

It gets worse: Under SOPA's provisions, service providers (including hosting services) would be under new pressure to monitor and police their users’ activities. While PROTECT-IP targeted sites “dedicated to infringing activities,” SOPA targets websites that simply don’t do enough to track and police infringement (and it is not at all clear what would be enough). And it creates new powers to shut down folks who provide tools to help users get access to the Internet the rest of the world sees (not just the “U.S. authorized version”)."

We need to kill these noxious bills. So do what you can. Spread the word. Contact your member of Congress or Senator. And/or join Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) in his epic plan to stop it. In signing this petition, not only are you saying you want it stopped, but Wyden will read off every name on this list in one of the greatest filibusters ever, should SOPA come up to a vote. So if you have, like, five seconds (I know you do, if you're reading this!) go sign your name on the link above. If you have slightly more than five seconds, please edit the text in the blue box to come up with your own unique statement as to why you want SOPA blocked. This is important as in government petitions, names that post the same exact copypasta statement are all counted as a single comment, while unique comments are counted separately. While posting with the copypasta will get your name on the filibuster, including a unique statement will do even more good than that.

...Right, so that's your PSA for the day. I have personally had a very nice Thanksgiving weekend. Wednesday we opened up the imu and I ate ALL OF THE FOOD, oh god, like three kinds of meat and ulu and sweet potatoes and SO MANY OTHER DELICIOUS THINGS, and then I hauled myself and my food baby in my truck and managed not to pass out from food coma while barreling down the highway, and then I had a whole afternoon to kill so I whacked open some coconuts and broke the lawnmower. Then it was Thursday and Mom and I cooked and decorated all day and friends came over and we ate ALL OF THE FOOD AGAIN, and it was good. Friday night was Jazz Mele at the Tavern, and Alex did his fabulous musician thing and I did my fabulous dancer thing, and afterwards we went for "late night grindz" (his words, he texts me in Pidgin, ohmigod he is such a DORK ♥) at Ken's House of Pancakes. Saturday we went on a hike in the National Park and he let me drag him down a 2200+ foot cliff and then back up it again, and in the middle of all that we made out on a lonely beach, so that was fun. :3 Discovered after the fact that 1) at a bit less than eight miles, that was the longest hike he'd ever been on and 2) he'd never had Thai iced tea before, so THANK ZOLAC I'm around now to set him straight, the poor deprived man!

Okay, what else. You've all seen this year's Doctor Who Children In Need special, yes? No mini-episode this year, but Matt Smith is in character as the Doctor and he is ADORABLE LIKE A PUPPY and he maybe gets naked a little. Twice. FOR THE CHILDREN. Plus, a trailer for the Christmas episode! OMG NARNIA. :D :D :D

And, what the hell, since we're on the subject... the I'm A Time Lord! meme, stolen from my favorite Englishwoman, [livejournal.com profile] b_c_draygon.

Your job is now your Time Lord name. The last digit of your phone number is the current regeneration you are in. The nearest clothing item to your right is now the most notable item in your current wardrobe. The last person you texted is your current companion. Your favorite word is now your catchphrase.

Call me the Volunteer! Kind of a silly name, but if the name a Time Lord (or Lady) chooses is indicative of their values and goals and purpose in life, I'm sure the Doctor would approve... it's a very friendly, helpful sort of name, and I'm a friendly, helpful sort of Time Lady! I'm on my seventh regeneration (or is it my sixth?), I'm rather known for wearing a pair of low-slung American Eagle jeans that are longer in the leg than I am, and my companion is a musically-talented Carolinian by the name of Alex. ...Antidisestablishmentarianism!

Alex sounds TOO ADORBS FOR WORDS. I am ecstatically happy for you, darling! <3<3<3 It's brilliant how many of your favourite things he likes, too. <3

ALSO I HAD NOT SEEN THAT!! \0/ I shall watch it as soon as baby Nicky wakes up! :D :D

HE IS VERY FUCKING ADORABLE, NO LIE. But yeah, it's really excellent/convenient. I mean, likes to dance, likes to go hiking/other active, outdoorsy pursuits, these two things are at the top of my list of Desirable Guy Characteristics. It remains to be seen whether he is a nerd, or if not whether he can be converted, or at least inclined to find nerdiness endearing. We haven't really gotten to talking about books, film, and television yet. (That was one thing about Boyfriend #3, dancer, biologist, and we had practically identical tastes in media; I'd go over to his house and we'd cuddle on the couch and watch Avatar: The Last Airbender, it was AWESOME.) But he'll be in our house next weekend for our floorwarming party, OH GOD I HAVE TO CLEAN UP MY ROOM. *flailflailflail*

Last year I forgot about CIN entirely, but this year I was SO ON IT. ...Seriously, LIKE A PUPPY. *ruffles the Smif's hair*

*keeps fingers firmly crossed that these bills get stopped* Since the petition is for US people only, that appears to be all I can do at the moment. :(

Your Thanksgiving weekend sounds great. I am jealous of your food! (No, really, I was sitting at home with my parents eating admittedly very nice soup and dreaming of turkey with all the trimmings ...) There's a place called Ken's House of Pancakes? That sounds like an establishment I would enjoy. A LOT. XD Sounds like you had a lot of fun. :)

Haha, the CIN special! I was slightly surprised/disappointed that we didn't get a mini-episode, but really, Eleven stripping and being hilarious (and naughty, naughty red-button viewers removing his hologram-clothes!) combined with THAT TRAILER, well. Nothing to be disappointed about, really. :D NARNIA! *flail of joy*

Aww, am I your favourite Englishwoman? You say the nicest things! I think the Doctor would very much approve of you calling yourself the Volunteer, my dear. :)

Pfff, you should just go ahead and have Thanksgiving anyway. My friends and are always celebrating other people's holidays just for the excuse to cook and eat awesome food... parkin on Guy Fawkes Night, bananas foster on Australia Day... and then there's the celebration of obscure fictional holidays like Meat Day... mmmm Meat Day~....

Ken's is a classic Hilo establishment, it's been around since the 70s, and yeah, it's pretty excellent. It's like an awesome cross of American diner/pancake house food and local grindz, and it's the only place in town that's open 24 hours... it's always hopping at any time of the day or night. Screw IHOP, IHOP is lame... SO MUCH LOVE FOR KHOP. ♥

Yeah, they don't always do a mini-ep, which makes me sad... I think one year they did a concert? But I can't really complain this year. ...NARNIAAAAAAAAA~!! :D :D

Well, okay, to be fair, I think you're the only Englishwoman I actually know, on my Flist or off it. ...I mean, okay, [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon is English even if she lives in Iowa now, but we're not really friends... I just follow her journal for the excellent H50 fandom content. And [livejournal.com profile] sirona_gs and [livejournal.com profile] postcardmystery want to be English/are English in their souls/have lived in England and can't wait to go back and live there forever... but, yeah. Basically you're the official representative of England on my Flist. ...Not to devalue my estimation of your fabulousness, because honestly you'd be my favorite anyway. ♥

Hehe, maybe next year I will! Mmmm, parkin, my second favourite part of Guy Fawkes Night. I think we still have some, I might have to go and root it out now you've reminded me ...

Ooooo, Ken's definitely sounds like fun! ... I guess the question I'm burning to ask now is: Can you get pancakes 24 hours?

I am so looking forward to the Doctor in Narnia. NARNIA. I mean, I love a lot of fictional worlds, but Narnia is something special. And the Doctor is going there. Which can only make it even more awesome (and terrifying, because that's par for the course).

Hehehe, I guessed that might be the case anyway. :P But yay! ... Wow, I should probably make us look more, I don't know, Proper and Sensible and things, if I'm the official England rep. I don't think I've been selling us very well. XD

PARKIN IS DELICIOUS, I mean, basically I approve of anything that involves obscene amounts of molasses, mmmmmmm~!! ...What's your favorite part? IS IT SETTING THINGS ON FIRE?

Yes. Yes you can. Pancakes and waffles and pigs-in-a-blanket and other fine breakfast foods at any time of day. With maple and boysenberry and coconut and guava and passion fruit syrups. As a kid I was so excited by the concept of breakfast all day I didn't even know it was possible to get food there that wasn't breakfast. Then I learned to read the menu. XD;

Hahaha, ikr, alien Narnia! ONLY GOOD SHALL COME OF THIS! :D

Indeed, stiff upper lip and all that, wot. ;D (You can't fool me, Proper and Sensible is not the sort of thing what breeds Doctor Who and Monty Python and Mighty Boosh and Top Gear and Misfits and Danny Wallace and Eddie Izzard and such, I've been to England, okay, someone had a troll attached to the front bumper of their car, all right, I have pictures.)

Actually, hahaha, I am English, darling. (Well, Roman Catholic Black Irish diaspora, but it's been ninety years, so I can say I'm both by now, yeah?) But I suspect the fact that you think I'm American is flattering, although I should point out that I have never in fact been to the US.

Replying about ten million years later, because oh my god what has been my life recently, ffffff.

...Huh. You know, this is weird, because I know for a fact I've looked at your profile before, so I really should know this, and also I swear at some point in one of our conversations the notion of you being foreign (relative to me) came up or something, but it seems I'd forgotten, and I think what happened is when you made that comment at the beginning of "every part of your body rubs against the bricks" about loving London and not being a Londoner but intending to be one someday I think my brain was like, London equates to England? BECAUSE YOU KNOW, THERE'S NOTHING IN ENGLAND ASIDE FROM LONDON, REALLY, LONDON IS ALL THERE IS, FFFFFF.

I think you will find, however, THAT I SAID NOTHING ABOUT AMERICA. HA. My Flist is actually quite globally diverse, I hope you know. :P I think the only continent I'm missing is Africa. (And Antarctica, but, well, I think I can be forgiven for that.)

(...Okay fine, I honestly can't remember but you're right, it's very likely that I assumed you were American. I'm glad you think it's flattering? Not sure everybody would. ^_^;;)

So anyway, I guess that makes you MY SECOND FAVORITE ENGLISHWOMAN. (Hope you don't mind, this is not to devalue your inherent FABULOUSNESS, it's just that I've known [livejournal.com profile] b_c_draygon longer, we have history, you see.)

I do enjoy that the Batmans are congregating. Social Justice Batman enjoys the company of Internet Batman Previously Conservation Batman, and Achievement Gap Batman. Soon we'll be able to rent out the Econo Lodge conference suite for conventions! ...Through shady offshore wire transfers and mysterious benefactors, obviously. Under false names. And we will enter and leave through windows and AC ducts. But you know what I mean.

I'LL BE THERE WITH MY TRUSTY SIDEKICK-ANIMAL, BAT-ALPACA. BECAUSE ALPACAS ARE THE GREENEST OF ANIMALS.

...I am seriously considering adding Conservation Batman to my list of future Halloween costumes.

Also, I am going to heat up some leftovers and watch OUAT right this very fucking second, now that it's finally downloaded. LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT SHINY PINK SHIRT. ...Yes, I am replying to a text message in a Livejournal comment, WHAT, I AM BEING EFFICIENT OKAY.

I'M FINE HOW ARE YOOOOOUUUUUU~? :D :D

OH. OH SHIT. Okay, I need to make a legit post about this just for the sheer magnificence of it, but. Long story short, I was doing some Googling and came across this. It's... kind of my new favorite thing in life. Also, the alpaca looks alarmingly like Ryan Ross. JUST SAYING.

Social Justice Batman is my true identity. Mild Mannered Daria H is the true disguise. YEAH YEAH I WENT THERE.

Ohgod, yeah, I watched it this morning and he's in it for like, two fucking seconds, but godddd. Idk. I'm just so in love. [livejournal.com profile] maliberte says I should send him a DO YOU LIKE ME? CHECK Y/N note, but I feel like it should be more like, DO YOU LIKE ME? CHECK "YES!!!" OR "VERY VERY YES!!!!" and I will write it in glitter pen and spray it with Vera Wang.

HAY HAY EFFICIENCY IS ALL GOOD. I'm in class writing this while simultaneously taking notes on cognitive behavioral therapy concepts. And tweeting. Annnnd you just texted me. So now I'm texting you back. MOTHERFUCKING MULTITASKING, BABY. \o/
