Does anyone remember this meme going around several months ago, "My fandom is really good at what I do" or "My fandom is really good at my job", or something of the sort? And everyone wrote AU fic where the characters of [FANDOM OF CHOICE] did whatever it is the author's real-life job is, and the point was to just dive right in and do as little 'splaining as possible? (I tried to go find this thing, but my Google-Fu has let me down.)
...Does anyone think it's been long enough since that happened that we could do it again? Because the last time it went around I really loved my job at the time, but it didn't really inspire me for fic, and anyway all of my fic-writing time and energy was wrapped up in That One Story, so I sort of let the meme pass me by. But now I have a different job and I'm done with Pō Pouli and all of a sudden I'm inspired and OH MY GOD YOU GUYS, I WANT TO DO THIS NOW, I have sooooo many ideas for Five-0 Does Hawaiian Forest Bird Ecology, CAN WE DO THIS MEME AGAIN, CAN WE? ...WHO'S WITH ME? Because I really want to write this thing but it feels dreadfully self-indulgent and silly and I would feel less ridiculous/embarrassed if I had some company. T_T
Anyway, it's about time for the Angela Reblogs Awesome Things Found By Cooler People post. GET READY TO GET RECC'D!
-First off, most importantly, "Shia LaBeouf" by Rob Cantor (on SoundCloud). LISTEN TO IT. OH MY GOD JUST TRUST ME YOU GUYS, IT WILL BE THE BEST THING YOU'VE HEARD ALL YEAR.
-Cover of LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" by Noah. Fair warning, you may abruptly find yourself encumbered with the UNCONTROLLABLE URGE TO HAVE SEX WITH THIS PERSON. I'm serious. Just... just wait until he starts singing. And playing his guitar. SO UNF.
[Error: unknown template video]
-"Kicked Your Monkey", a Bad Lip Reading of Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know". FREAKING HILARIOUS. You may need to turn on captions, though.
[Error: unknown template video]
-Music video for Genki Sudo, "World Order". THESE GUYS ARE SO COOL. It's like if Ok Go were Japanese. And robots.
[Error: unknown template video]
-Doctor Who Theme on eight floppy drives. Guaranteed the nerdiest thing to caress your eardrums all week.
[Error: unknown template video]
-FIC REC! The Tale of X by thehoyden on AO3. An XMFC AU that takes place in old Japan. A+ use of mythology, and basically SO DEEPLY APPROPRIATE OMG.
-A pretty excellent article for those of you interested in Hawai‘i stuff: Paul Theroux's Quest to Define Hawai‘i from the May 2012 issue of Smithsonian. He's... mostly right, at least in his observations.
-From mangocianamarch on Tumblr. BEST EVER.

Date: 2012-05-14 11:26 pm (UTC)That Shia LaBoeuf song is just amazing. I don't know why it exists, but it is amazing. I should probably not sing it out loud too much at work, though. (The rest of those things I will need to listen to later, since I'm sitting outside in a heavily-populated area just barely maintaining an aura of respectability.)

Date: 2012-05-15 02:40 am (UTC)IT EXISTS BECAUSE ROB CANTOR IS A GENIUS, AND ONE DAY HE WOKE UP AND SAID, WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS
LOVE, SWEET LOVEA SONG ABOUT CANNIBAL SHIA LABEOUF, I AM GOING TO DO THE WORLD A SOLID AND MAKE THIS SONG RIGHT NOW. It's just... so perfect, Shia is exactly the right kind of obnoxious to make this song work. ...It's really weird though, I've been playing this song around my housemates and my mom, and no one reacts. It's really confusing, I'm like... do I need to play the song again? Do I need to play it louder? HOW CAN YOU BE BLANDLY AMBIVALENT ABOUT THIS?!no subject

Date: 2012-05-17 02:01 am (UTC)On the other hand, I used to be very good at inflicting my weirdness on others. I kind of miss that. College sort of ruined that for me, oddly enough (stupid first-year dorm had more back-stabbing people than high school ever did, wtf).

Date: 2012-05-15 03:44 am (UTC)Dar and I just keep quoting it at each other. I'm not sure what I'd do if I met someone who was ambivalent about it. I wonder if it's the speak-singing? That seems to cause some people to just automatically stop paying attention (fortunately, it's one of the things that kind of automatically makes me like a song, or at least express interest). ^_^

Date: 2012-05-17 01:18 am (UTC)I just... even if you're not paying attention, how can you miss phrases like MY GOD, THERE'S BLOOD EVERYWHERE or YOUR LEG, IT'S CAUGHT IN A BEAR TRAP, I think this would manage to catch my attention even if I were totally distracted by something else. ...Idk, I think these people are just not weird enough, they don't know what to do when confronted by weird, so they pretend they're not seeing/hearing it. Like when I walked around campus in my cloak and Guy Fawkes mask that one November Fifth and I would see people's eyes turn towards me... and then just sliiiiiiiiide away. XD;

Date: 2012-05-17 02:10 am (UTC)I'm justifying this as un-creepy because I've done a pretty decent job of getting the actual shopkeep separated from his internet alter-ego in my mind.)Or, alternately, there's always the Hulk Destroys a Bike Shop for Improperly Installing Brake Pads option (which I'm rather fond of at the moment, since I know I don't have the powers necessary to hulk-out on them properly for that particular idiocy).
I've learned the pretend-you-don't-see-it thing pretty well, living in Chicago, but there are still things that get a reaction from me no matter what. Especially "MY GOD, THERE'S BLOOD EVERYWHERE." And also "actual cannibal, Shia LaBoeuf." I guess I'm just weird, though.

Date: 2012-05-17 02:23 am (UTC)Both of these sound like fantastic ideas! ESPECIALLY HULK DESTROYS BIKE SHOP, OMG, I JUST LAUGHED EMBARRASSINGLY LOUDLY FOR AN EMBARRASSING LENGTH OF TIME. Bike shop Avengers, omg yes! Tony can design bikes. STARKCYCLE! And you can give Loki the hipster fixie he so badly wants/needs/deserves!

Date: 2012-05-17 02:46 am (UTC)I might just write Hulk Destroys Bike Shop now. Or on Friday, after I fail to destroy the bike shop myself.

Date: 2012-05-17 02:55 am (UTC)Haha staring into space and giggling is basically my Writing Process. Is it so fucking ridiculous I can't contain myself? Yes? QUICK WRITE IT DOWN.
I AM SO EXCITED FOR HULK DESTROYS BIKE SHOP.

Date: 2012-05-17 03:33 am (UTC)I'm pretty sure that is the best writing process. I wish it worked for things other than what I write for the express purpose of amusing myself (and sometimes others).

Date: 2012-05-17 03:51 am (UTC)See, I guess that's the thing about fanfiction that makes it so addicting; that's all it has to be. Amuses Self Plus Maybe A Few Others: Check! SUCCESS. It doesn't even have to make money or anything!
Clearly, though, you need to manage to get yourself a writing gig where ridiculousness is encouraged. Because you're right, I can't imagine the Does It Make Me Giggle? writing process working very well with your current job. ^_^;;

Date: 2012-05-15 04:53 am (UTC)...Well, this should be interesting, I definitely don't have the legions of Friends she does, and I've never tried to host any sort of fandom party before... on the other hand I've got friends in a few different fandoms from hers, so maybe I can get some exposure with people who missed it the first time around, and maybe I can get some help from people spreading the word. ...Guess I'll probably want to ask
Hmm, well, something to think about. I'm probably going to have to wait until early June, when I'm back from my expedition, but I think this could be really fun!
