...So that was fun. XD; I am going to have to smack Keola, oh my god, that kid is such a terrible influence.

I almost never feel like going out on a Thursday night, but we only worked a half day, so when Keola showed up with his friend Eric I'd already showered and packed my stuff and cleaned my room and eaten dinner, and I was just lounging around drinking a beer and watching Daniel Craig's ass Cowboys and Aliens. And he invited me out to Karaoke Night at the Lava Lounge and I hadn't been in months, so I said sure, and me and Shawn and Eric hopped into 'Ola's truck and off we went.

It was super fun. Everyone was there. I sang "Born To Be Wild", and I didn't pay for any of my drinks. ...And there were a lot of drinks. Had a couple of tequila shots and a hell of a lot of beer... not sure how much exactly. Two beers before the bar, and then... two more? Maybe? At least one, but I can't actually remember. ^_^;;

I ditched out before Keola and Eric were ready to go (Shawn had already left) and ended up walking back to the house by myself. This would be like a mile in pitch dark and rain, and my flashlight was low on batteries and I was drunker than I'd ever been in my life, so drunk I could barely see straight. I chose to walk on the trails rather than the road, and had a lot of fun staggering over the uneven ground, my flashlight creating just enough illumination that I could kind of tell the difference between the path and the vegetation on either side. It's kind of a miracle I didn't fall into a steam vent or Kīlauea Caldera and DIE. Also I am really really glad I know the trails in this park so well, because at the very least I knew exactly where I was at all times, even in the pitch black, or else I never would've found the house.

Made it back safely. Threw up in my bed, LIKE A BOSS. Peeled off all the sheets and curled up backwards on the mattress, curled up in my quilt. ...I've never ever drunk myself sick before... so much for my streak! But I feel fine today, no hangover or nothing, so at least there's that.

...GUYS I MAKE EXCELLENT CHOICES.

Haha, that is the correct response to this post I think, yes. ^_^;;

Don't make me start worrying about you out there! Because I'll do it! I will! (So, were you actually drunk posting from the woods last night, or were those posts just as you left and when you got home? (-; )

I wouldn't worry too much, this sort of thing is extremely out of character for me. ...On the other hand, Keola lives next door to me now, and that kid has some pretty potent puppy eyes... maybe I should worry. You could always come over here where you can keep an eye on me and make sure I stay out of trouble. :D

First post was from KMC, so pitch dark and raining but not the woods yet. Second post was right after I got home. I did drunk!email my friend Neve from the woods though, about the time I was right on the edge of the crater and my flashlight wasn't producing photons. :D

Precisely why I worry! This Keola could be a very bad influence. Let me finish getting Godot sorted out, then I'll work on moving out there to keep an eye on you! (I may need to import Chicago's cyclocross scene, too... that might be the hardest part, though.)

I kind of want to see pictures of this treacherous hike, so I know exactly how much to be frowning at my screen. ^_^

That does sound difficult, but I'd love it if you managed to bring cyclocross with you!

You know, I actually do have a bunch of pictures from the very same trail from a previous daytime trek to KMC that I'm planning on including in my next picspam post... guess I'd better work on that! And the hike's not really that treacherous at all... unless you're stumbling, cross-eyed drunk and it's pitch dark and raining and your flashlight isn't working properly, which was actually the case last night, so, err... heh. It is called Crater Rim Trail for a reason. And there are a lot of steam vents and other earth cracks of the won't-cook-me-but-are-still-quite-deep-and-full-of-sharp-rocks variety that are right on the side of the trail without any sort of fence or safety rail or anything. Not always a railing in the edge of the crater either. ... :DD

I think the topography might make it the hardest sell... cyclocross just isn't cyclocross to people here without potential for racing in the snow, but I can't imagine anyone here dealing well with the altitudes we'd have to scale to find snow. (Though... I can't picture a race in that setting with a bunch of career midwesterners being anything other than completely hilarious.)

Ah, I love it when a trail has some small measure of danger and isn't all covered in railings so you still have the option of falling to your doom. Something tells me I would like this trail a lot... during the day. Or with a working flashlight. And not drunk. ^_^

Oh god, bike race at 14,000 feet, hahaha that sounds horrible, everyone would die! XD

I agree! I used to love trail running on Mānoa Cliff Trail on O'ahu... narrow, strewn with rocks and roots, perpetually slick with mud, perched on the very very edge of a sheer cliff dropping into Mānoa Valley, no safety considerations of any sort, and there I go, hurtling down the path at a swift run, trying not to die. It was super fun!

But yeah, there are a lot of trails like that in the park. The Park Service is actually very safety conscious, but it would be impossible to fence off every one of the thousands of steam vents and earth cracks and craters and skylights, and plus it would totally ruin the wilderness experience. It's definitely a 'hold onto your children, stay on the trails, obey the safety signs, and don't be a fucking idiot' kind of park. ...I'm pretty sure I qualified for 'fucking idiot' on Thursday... but I did stay on the trail!

...COME VISIT ME I WILL TAKE YOU HIKING IN THE NATIONAL PARK IT WILL BE ENJOYABLE I KNOW ALL THE BEST TRAILS. :D Also we have lots of topography here, I know how much you enjoy that. ; )

"Everyone would die!" might actually be a pretty decent draw for people. (-;

Ahhh, goshdarnit, I am totally going to try to actually come visit next year, once my vacation time resets itself. After my LA trip I am more than ready for a vacation that involves actually doing things outside under my own power.

Topography is a rare and treasured thing around here. It's basically required that I appreciate it. That and good weather.

Well in that case, make it your campaign slogan!

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. Oh dear, did LA involve a lot of sitting around in air-conditioned buildings and people driving you places?

Hawaii Snow-Cross 2013: IT WILL PROBABLY KILL YOU. I'm accepting t-shirt design submissions now.

Yeah, LA was a lot of sitting around in apartments and in cars. It was a pretty much the definition of Not My Sort of Thing. Which is a shame. I'm not sure I'm okay with there being a city out there that I don't actually like.

Yeah, you won't find me defending L.A. Not that I've spent a lot of time there, mind. ...Although I think I could've shown you a better time than that, even given my limited experience and... L.A., which doesn't give us much to work with. We could've gone to the La Brea Tar Pits! Because... dire wolf skulls! And mastodons! And then I would've taken you to Topanga Canyon and we would've spent all day digging up fossils! (These are the only two places I know in L.A.)

ha ha ha! I'm glad you had a fun time and that you're okay. Eek! Throwing up in your bed like a boss! I know I shouldn't laugh but your write up of the night was very amusing. You are very lucky you're not... I don't know, lost in the jungle (I kid, Hawai'i, I kid.) Or hungover, Missy! I'm glad it all turned out okay and that you had a big fun time.Born to be Wild for real! :)

Oh no, by all means, if I didn't want you guys to laugh at me I wouldn't have made the post. I happen to think it's freaking hilarious myself.

No seriously, if I were anyone but me, getting lost in the jungle would've been a very real possibility... most people would've opted to use the road, but I wasn't too thrilled about the combination of pitch black, bad weather, extremely drunk Angela, and possibly inebriated drivers... figured I'd take my chances with sheer cliffs and steam cracks instead. Luckily, even drunk off my face I have a very clear map in my head of the trail system in that area, so I didn't really have to be able to see very well in order to take all the right turns and end up at my house and not, say, at the bottom of Kīlauea Iki Crater a few miles away.

I've never had a hangover in my life. STILL HOLDING STRONG!

Hahaha, appropriate song is appropriate, right? XD;

Now that sounds like quite an adventure, lol! I'm glad you got home alright and are okay - except for throwing up in bed and breaking your streak. ;-) I very much hope you'll never fall in any steam vent or Kīlauea Caldera!

IT WAS EPIC. It was totally worth it, if only for the awesome story. Kinda wish I hadn't thrown up in bed, though... I'm still cleaning up after that. :P

YES THANK YOU ME TOO. I try really really really hard not to!
