So this morning on the bus I became so enthralled reading a [livejournal.com profile] gyzym Inception fic that I completely missed my stop, like, by A LOT, and ended up being half an hour late for work. Fml.

...Good fic, though.

Also, I would like to take this moment to do you all a favor and give you some helpful advice. I was going to save this for a general meme/spazzflail/spam post, but seeing as I haven't had time to do a proper O HAI THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO THESE LAST WEEKS post, I think it might be a while. And I really just can't help myself.

My helpful, friendly advice is this: watch Luther.

This BBC mini-series is, imo, the best-written show to come out in 2010. And I'm inncluding Sherlock in my estimation, here. Somehow, though, Luther has managed to fly completely under the radar. Which is a TRAGEDY.

So here's the haps. It's a cop show that sort of defies the cop show formula, in a way that is hard to describe without giving you spoilers that you really don't want. But I think that, aside from the sheer sparkling quality of the writing, the show benefits from being a mini-series in the traditional style of the BBC: full hour length episodes, and only six of them. This allows the show to go from awesome to CRAZY ohmigod idek SHIT GOT REAL in only five episodes.

But don't take my word for it. [livejournal.com profile] platoapproved, [livejournal.com profile] deathscytheheck,
[livejournal.com profile] regonym, and my friend Chris love it, too. Basically, everyone I know who's
seen it fell madly and instantly in love with it... except for [livejournal.com profile] shichahn. I'm not judging you bb, but to be perfectly honest I'm baffled. The only thing I can think of
is it's not science-fiction, and it doesn't have David Tennant in it. Both of which are valid reasons.

It's true Luther contains no science-fiction whatsoever, but it does use black holes and dark matter as metaphors for psychosis. And it may not have David Tennant, but it does have Paul McGann for your Doctory pleasure. And John Luther is kinda like Batman if he was a cop, and also a tall black man with a South London accent (actual Britons on my Flist, correct me if I'm wrong here) who is less successful in controlling his anger issues. And Alice Morgan is SO FREAKING AWESOME she is awesome enough to be my only female LJ icon (unless you count the TARDIS). And really all the characters are brilliant, and the acting is brilliant, and the soundtrack is brilliant, and the writing is so brilliant I could really just sit around and watch the characters talk to each other all day and nevermind the plot, but the plot happens and it's like HOLY SHIT AHHHHHHHHHHH and basically it's just all-around amazing. So watch Luther.

You're welcome.

Meh, it's not even the lack of David Tennant. Single Father wasn't that interesting to me either. Science fiction helps a lot of course, but is not critical in my viewing choice. I know I typically have zero interest in crime shows though, unless they have awesome crazy characters like Life on Mars does. And I suppose some of the characters in Luther count as awesome and crazy to some people but they just weren't interesting to me. Especially not the crazy person in your icon. I couldn't stand her for some reason. :/

Fffff, well you are just a heathen then, obviously. :P

Like I said, totally valid, especially the cop show thing, but honestly baffling. You are the curious statistical outlier.

Well, I am glad I am not totally predictable? Haha.

Indeed! Usually our interests are in alignment, I'm always surprised when they're not.

If you don't like crime shows, I guess maybe I won't even try showing you White Collar?

Yeah... Which is sad as I know you like it and I want to enjoy stuff you like because I do typically trust your taste in shows. But when you described it to me it just didn't really catch my interest. :/ I don't know, I wouldn't mind watching an episode in case it does end up being one of those oddities like Life on Mars where I do enjoy it, but I guess my hopes aren't that high.

Yeah, I'm never quite sure whether to recommend White Collar to anyone, really, although I've got a few friends who adore it as much as I do, and the others at least enjoy it enough to want to watch all the episodes. I don't think I know anyone who's watched it who's disliked it, but... there's nothing really special about it on paper. It's your basic crime show formula. It's not like Life on Mars, which is Crime Show Formula + Crazy Weird Bizarre Cracky Unique Twist, or Luther which is... Sort Of Crime Show Formula And Sort Of Not In A Way That Is Hard To Describe Especially Without Spoilers. It's just... Crime Fighting Unit Plus Specialist, With Plot, and in this case the Specialist is a con man/forger/art thief/etc CI. What makes it special to me is the characters and the character interactions... something about Neal and Peter and Elizabeth and Mozzie and June (and everyone else, but them especially) just... clicked with me, right off the bat. And I think Matt Bomer is adorable, and I think Neal Caffrey is adorable and the show is full of joyful heisting and anti-heisting and shenanigans and hilarity plus also angst and bromance and... I dunno, I just really enjoy it for some reason.

DO YOU LIKE MY ICON?

I'm working over the last few days on uploading the massive amounts of caps I did of the entire show. At which point I will write up a crazy recommendation for it, too.

Since I agree heartily with all of the rest of this post, I have basically one thing to say/ask - which gyzym fic was it that made you miss your bus stop? *curious*

It was the last (or merely latest? *hopes*) one in The Domestic Verse, 'having let go forever the fallacy of ever being alone'. ...It could've happened with any one of hers, though, really.

Oh, I'm sure she's planning to write more in that verse. ♥ Although I do have a lot of love for that story in particular, because d'awwww, homecomings and Arthur sleeping on the couch and the TREE wtfff. I love the way she writes those two so much.

I knooooow~!! Gah, she's so fabulous. And like, all of her fics are full of all of these amazing moments... this one was a lot of fun, though. Truly domestic. I mean, cars breaking down and trees falling on your house and the plumbing not working and someone accidentally cutting themselves and the other one flipping out and them both going to the ER... the joys of domestic life, right there! ^_^

You've convinced me. Downloading Luther now! Am expecting much fabulousness jsyk.

Incidentally, d'you think you might be up to betaing an Arthur/Eames fic for me? It's a gift exchange, will probably be about 8K at most, and I'll need it by 30th Dec. :D?

No, I don't! It's amazing how long we've gone without knowing each other's emails! :D D'you want to PM me with it? I'll do my very best to have the story finished by the end of next week, so that I don't impose on your generosity over the hols!
