1. The Mother's Day hike was FANTASTIC. The Napau Crater trail is still closed, since that's where that awesome volcanic vent opened up earlier in the spring and the volcanologists aren't sure that the whole area won't get swallowed by a gaping fissure or sommat. So Mom and I went with Plan B, Ka‘aha. It was the RIGHT DECISION. The air was vog-free, and it was probably the only sunny spot on the entire island (although it's possible we would've been in luck at Kahuku or South Point). I got sunburned, my muscles got fatigued hauling me back up the cliff, the ocean was dynamic, I had a nice nap on a rock, and I took pictures of many wide, sweeping vistas, which I might share with y'all at some point. Maybe. Haha.
2. I started watching the documentary series on South Pacific islands by the same people who brought us Planet Earth. I got 48 seconds in and burst into hysterical laughter, because it is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. The documentaries are gorgeous, and they caught some really amazing groundbreaking footage, but whoever wrote the script needs to be taken out back and shot. I keep fidgeting with the need to go at it with a red pen. I can only imagine what Mr. Cumberbatch must have thought of it.
3. All of my shows have been AWESOME recently (except for the Doctor Who ep that I thought was rather weak), probably because everything's sneaking up on its season finale (except for the Doctor Who ep). GREY'S ANATOMY! THE VAMPIRE DIARIES!! SUPERNATURAL!!! HAWAII FIVE-OOOOOOHHHHHH!!!! I am so happy.
4. Went to see Thor today. It was good! Not life-changingly awesome superhero movie, but it was solid and entertaining and there was nothing in it that made me hate it. The 3-D stopped being distracting almost immediately. The interactions of Thor and other Asgardians with the denizens of Midgard (Earth) were hilarious in terms of cultures clashing to comedic effect. Thor himself is... kind of freaking adorable. And hot. S.H.I.E.L.D. dude continues to be hilarious, Natalie Portman's character was likeable, and Idris Elba as Heimdall was, as expected, FABULOUS. I kind of wanted to give Loki a hug. (Completely incidentally, I wore my Superman shirt today. It was only much later that I realized the irony.)
5. I would go and see Hobo With A Shotgun, but it's not playing in Hilo. TRAGEDY OF MY LIFE.
6. I AM INFECTING MY MOTHER WITH PATRICK STUMP. :DDDDDDDD WILL WONDERS NEVER CEASE! ...I had my "Patrick and Friends" playlist on while I was cooking dinner and she wandered in during "Big Hype"... and came over to peer at the Artist column in my iTunes, impressed. SHE LIKES IT. So then I had to explain briefly who Patrick Stump was, and play more Patrick Stump, and then later while we were brushing teeth I brought in my laptop and showed her the video for the A Capella Grammy medley to illustrate what he looks like when he sings (Mom: "He's not very inhibited, is he?"), and then I showed her my favorite Patrick performance gifs for further illustration, and I showed her the video for "Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)", and I played the opening bit of "Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet" and the end of "w.a.m.s." to illustrate the lower end of his vocal range, and then "Golden" just because it's pretty, and then I played his new single "Explode" (because she saw "Thriller" and asked, "Is that like Michael Jackson?" and I was like, "No, but THIS IS.") and the "Patrick Stump makes a new album" video and I talked a lot about Fall Out Boy and Patrick Stump and the kind of person he is and what his solo project is all about and what my concert experience was like and we ended up standing in the bathroom for more than an hour and SHE LIKES HIM HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! She is getting so spammed with Fall Out Boy songs.
...TRIUMPH!!

DRIVE-BY POST!
Apr. 27th, 2011 01:28 pmIn case anyone noticed that my internet presence has diminished recently, be not afraid... I'm not going anywhere, I don't hate you, none of that. It's just that I'm moving out of my apartment. ON SATURDAY. And getting on a plane and flying back to Hawaii for the foreseeable future. And so I am VERY VERY BUSY OH MY GOD packing and selling and shipping and freaking out, etc.
Things should be back to normal soon. I may even start writing again, if I can nail myself to some kind of schedule (unstructured time is extremely detrimental to my productivity).
So that's it. I don't have time to chat, so I won't tell you about last weekend's epic Oregon desert adventure and belly-crawling through caves and Big Hole and Hole-in-the-Ground and Crack in the Ground and Fort Rock and Summer Lake and Paisley and many exciting wildlifes and Bend and delicious delicious Easter brunch at McKay Cottage Restaurant. I'm also not going to tell you how hilarious I find it that the creators of The Vampire Diaries clearly listen exclusively to my iTunes (Patrick Stump now, I ask you, as if all of the Metric and Placebo AND SO ON AND SO ON weren't enough).
I will tell you that you should check out Pioneer One, because it's a neat little project and also awesome science fiction. The project is kind of an experiment in the vein of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. It's an independently-produced serial funded entirely by viewer donations, licensed under Creative Commons, and distributed by BitTorrent. The first three episodes are available for download or streaming; I devoured them ravenously while shoving clothes into boxes yesterday, and I now eagerly await episode four, which comes out tomorrow.
Plot summary: "A mysterious spaceship has entered Earth's atmosphere. A US Department of Homeland Security investigation has uncovered a live human being in a Soviet space suit in an unstable condition. A note in Russian, found at the crash site, claims the man is the child of cosmonauts living at a base on Mars."
Check it out, yo. Support the future of entertainment, and enjoy what is actually a pretty awesome show.

Back in Portland now. Have some numbers: I was awake for over thirty hours (after very minimal amounts of sleep for the three nights previous), we drove for about twelve hours (hard to tell, we stopped a few times for food and bathrooms and running around in the dark like lunatics and napping at rest stops), after which I slept for EIGHTEEN HOURS (I told
look_alive that I fully expected to wake up and be surprised and confused by the time on the clock and the presence or absence of light outside of my window; I was), and I had great difficulty taking off my new Patrick shirt and even greater difficulty not putting it back on after my shower, as I had become emotionally bonded to it over the thirty-six hours during which I had been wearing it.
So anyway, hanging out with
platoapproved is yay, and on Friday
look_alive and I successfully navigated Bay Area public transportation (it was mostly her, she's badass) and spent a chunk of the afternoon wandering at random around Golden Gate Park, which was supremely excellent. Saturday I woke my ass up without nearly enough sleep and successfully navigated Bay Area highways and the actual streets of San Francisco to meet up with Alex and Nova and Nova's bridesmaids for brunch and wedding dress fitting and going to REI with my brother so he could buy me those five-toed hiking shoes for my birthday, after which was more hanging out with
platoapproved and sushi and Hawaii Five-0 before getting in the car and DRIVING FOREVER.
In between all that was PATRICK.
...I can tell you already, guys, this post is going to be really long. You've been warned.
( Okay, so, let me preface this by saying that this Patrick Stump concert experience that I just had is the best concert experience I have ever had in my life. And I have had a fair number of supremely freaking excellent, life-changing amazing concert experiences. )

So I'm in San Jose, California this weekend. Hanging out with
platoapproved and
suzume_tori, yay! Going to the Patrick Stump concert, yay! Hanging out with my brother and his fiàncée/wife Nova (it's complicated) and meeting Nova's bridesmaids and going to her wedding dress fitting and going to REI with my brother to get my feet fitted for my birthday present, yay!
So
look_alive and I drove all day and got in last night, and we went to Mini Gourmet, the 24-hour diner of fantabulousness with
platoapproved and
suzume_tori, and I did some dramatic read-alouds and then we went to bed on
platoapproved's floor.
I dreamed about trying to go to the concert and there was some fuck up with the tickets, the name on the front of the ticket was not mine and the name on the back of the ticket was not only not mine but not the same as the name on the front of the ticket, and I was not the only person having this problem, and the ticket person was looking at me all dubious-like, and I was like, "Look, I bought my tickets months ago, clearly it is not my fault, clearly this is a problem everyone is having, something got fucked up with the tickets, can you just LET US IN?!"
The dream moved on, some unrelated things happened that I can't remember properly/can't make sense of, and then it was a weird Hawaii Five-0 dream. It was someone's birthday, whose kept changing, it started out Danny's and then at some point it was Grace's. (Maybe it was both? Maybe they have the same birthday, or their birthdays are close together?) Danny went to pick Grace up from somewhere where she was hanging out with a bunch of other kids and this family friend of theirs who owned a restaurant, and they sang happy birthday to Danny, and he was all distracted because A CRISIS WAS HAPPENING. Before Danny went to deal with the CRISIS he talked to the restaurant owner about whether his restaurant was free to have a birthday party for Grace, and the dude said something about how he'd check on his supplies and let Danny know, but this was a lie... I can't remember if something shady was going on, or if someone had already made plans for a birthday party for Danny there.
Back home (my house in Hilo) it was raining and the roof was leaking and this was somehow sinister, and Danny was trying to handle this and handle the fact that he had to run off and handle a CRISIS and handle the fact that he needed to plan Grace's birthday party and handle the fact that he needed to make sure she finished her math homework first (Rachel was standing by, reminding him of all of this) and the kid next door called up and was like, "Hey, I've finished the problem sets, we could both go over to Maile's house and quiz each other," and I (apparently for a brief time I was Grace) was like, "I haven't even done the problem sets yet!"
Danny eventually had to drop everything and go handle the CRISIS with the rest of the team... which turned out to be investigating these ruins of an ancient city, trying to figure out how the city had been destroyed. They found these vents with a whole bunch of dead mosquitoes littered about, and they were like, "Someone pumped a plague of mosquitoes into the city and everyone died!" and then they found a whole bunch of cloves scattered about another vent and they were like, "But wait, cloves can be used as mosquito repellent!" which disproved the mosquito theory... somehow. And then Chin started having a horrible asthma attack (as he does) and he couldn't breathe and blood was coming out of his nose and someone was like, "Wait! Mosquito bites are an ancient treatment for asthma!" (as it is) so we (I don't know whose POV I was in at this point, maybe Kono's) lowered Chin into this trough of water and he tried not to drown in blood and dirty water and the mosquitoes came and swarmed all over him and then I woke up.
...Even in my dream I noticed that Grace's child actress was very much lacking in acting skills, and as usual it made me sad.

HEY. HEY. SO WHO'S GOING TO THE EMERALD CITY COMIC CON? Besides me and
magusronin, that is.
HAVE YOURSELVES SOME VERY NICE SPAM. :D
First off, do yourselves all a favor and watch this video. If Patrick Stump's beautiful voice and beautiful face do not already fill your heart with joy, this video ought to. It is full of happy song and happy people doing REALLY AWESOME happy things, and there is a happy dog and Patrick is happy too. And adorable. WARNING: WATCHING THIS VIDEO MAY MAKE YOU HAPPY.
[Error: unknown template video]
And then there's this.
( In case you were wondering, yes, the Batfamily doing a Lady Gaga dance is exactly what you've been missing from your life. )
